Practice-Led PhD York St John University and Theatre Hullabaloo (2023-2026)

PhD Working Title: The Offer-Response Cycle: A Playful, Non-Verbal Approach to Co-Creating Theatre with Very Young Children and their Adults

My research seeks to explore and refine the practice of co-creating theatre with very young children and their adults and to capture and make visible what this practice does for those taking part. Through my practice-led research I’m trying to discover a practice that allows professional artists to authentically collaborate with very young children, when we are unable to rely on spoken language to understand each other deeply.  I’m looking to develop a practice that feels rich and valuable for both the professional artists and the children-as-artists, where both can stretch their artistic wings and operate at the edges of their expertise and skill.  And finally, I’m trying to develop a practice that results in family friendly artworks that are ‘better’ than artworks that could be created by children or adults alone.
